Living Conditions

Since the children of the Holy Land are the main target group of Children without Borders, we are mapping two different living realities. The living reality of children who live:

  • Outside the Separation Wall and that includes children of Jerusalem
  • Within the Separation Wall and that includes children of the Palestinian Regions.

A.   The Jerusalem area and mainly the Old City of Jerusalem

Children living in the Old City, whether they are Christians or Muslims, are exposed to the following devastating social predicaments that stem from the serious problems the Old City suffers from. These major problems reside in these four segments:    

  • Housing and living conditions
  • Drug addiction and prostitution
  • Shattered family relationships
  • Lack of space and cultural facilities

    Housing and living conditions:

    • Houses in the Old City are overcrowded, small, shared, and closely adjunct to each other.
    • The house mainly consists of one big room where 6-7 members reside. Beds are made of 2 to 3 levels in order to provide space.
    • Kitchens and bathrooms are shared among two or three different families.
    •  Family problems are directly exposed, easily spread, and shared by neighbors. 
    • Housing conditions mainly cause many social and ethical problems where children end up being the ultimate victims.

B. Children living in the cities under the Palestinian Authority mainly Bethlehem

The construction of the Separation Wall imposed physical barriers on the mobility of all who live within the wall. Children are affected from the construction of the wall psychologically, educationally, and culturally. Restriction of movement restricts experience and thus vision.
Children without Borders seeks to dismantle the mental and psychological barriers created by the literal territorial barriers and thus help to enhance the mental liberation and psychological wellbeing of the participating children.
